| TITLE:
Differential Diagnosis of The Red Eye, Part 1 |
| ABSTRACT:
The most common ocular complaint presenting for medical care in an optometric practice is the red eye. It is where optometric primary therapeutic practice begins. Literature abounds on the subject, and for many ODs managing this condition has become routine. However, how this presentation is handled will either make the OD a hero in the patient's view, or send them scampering back to their family doctor, cursing the optometrist’s name.
The clinical term “red eye” is applied to many distinct infectious or inflammatory ocular diseases that involve one or more layers of eye tissue1. The inflamed eye can signify a mild problem or a serious, vision-threatening problem that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. As primary care providers, optometrists must be able to recognize these conditions, treat when necessary, and refer for specialized care when indicated. |
