| TITLE:
Idiopathic Choroidal Folds |
| ABSTRACT:
Choroidal folds are described as alternating light and dark streaks limited to the posterior pole, which can be seen upon ophthalmoscopy but are seen to an even greater extent with fluorescein angiography. They can be the result of a variety of conditions including orbital tumors, thyroid disease, papilledema, and inflammation. Although the majority of cases reported are classified as idiopathic, or associated with hyperopia, these are diagnoses of exclusion and all other ocular pathology should be ruled out. The following is a series of two case reports of patients who presented to the Sepulveda VA and Southern Arizona VA eye clinics and were diagnosed with choroidal folds. Upon thorough examination and diagnostic testing, the etiology was found to be idiopathic in both of these cases. After diagnostic testing was performed, ocular pathology was ruled out and the etiology of the choroidal folds in these two cases was determined to be idiopathic. The etiology of choroidal folds appears to be related to changes in the attachment of BruchÕs membrane to the underlying choriocapillaris. This paper outlines the clinical findings associated with choroidal folds, possible etiologies, and guidelines for diagnosis and optometric management. |
