TITLE:  Autoimmune Disease: When The Attack Comes from Within

ABSTRACT: Autoimmune diseases are the third most prevalent class of diseases in the United States after cancer and heart disease, and affect nearly every organ system in the body. Many autoimmune diseases affect the eye and its associated structures, and given the prevalence of autoimmune diseases in the population, O.D.s will probably see many patients with known or undiagnosed autoimmune diseases. This course will help O.D.s 1) Recognize ocular warning signs of possibly undiagnosed autoimmune disease and, depending on patient history and complaints, make appropriate referral to other health care professionals. 2) Treat ocular manifestations of autoimmune diseases.
