| ABSTRACT:
It is well known that diabetes is a major cause of death and disability in the United States. It is also the leading cause of blindness in adults 20-74 years of age.
Over 6% of the general population and 18.3% of persons over age 60 are diabetic.(1) In addition, an estimated 5 million people in the US (3.2% of the population) are diabetic but unaware of it.
Although diabetes is not yet considered curable, serious consequences, including blindness, can be significantly reduced by timely diagnosis and proper treatment.
Working in coordination with other health care providers, optometrists can play a major role in the detection and management of diabetes as illustrated by the following case example. |
