TITLE:  A Practical Guide to Diabetic Retinopathy

ABSTRACT: Diabetes mellitus is a major public health issue in Canada and the United States, and optometrists will frequently encounter patients with diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in clinical practice. This article reviews basic principles of diabetes and its systemic complications, in particular diabetic retinopathy. The pathophysiology as well as the clinical findings typical of nonproliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy and macular edema are discussed. The risk factors for the development of diabetic retinopathy are examined, and guidelines for the clinical management of patients with diabetic retinopathy are presented.
