| ABSTRACT:
The timing and treatment of lateral rectus muscle palsies poses a challenging problem for the clinician. In the following article, the options available during both the acute recovery phase and the chronic stable phase, including nonsurgical, surgical, and chemo-denervation therapies, are discussed. Emphasis is placed upon establishing stability before embarking on a definitive surgical treatment plan. Importance is also placed upon the need to differentiate between a complete lateral rectus muscle paralysis versus a lateral rectus muscle weakness or paresis. The correct procedure for one condition may be contraindicated for the other. In addition, a new treatment modality for the surgical treatment of patients with a total lateral rectus palsy and a history of previous horizontal rectus muscle surgery is presented. |
