| ABSTRACT:
Optometrists must prescribe drugs to patients for a variety of reasons. When the patient is a pregnant or nursing mother, the doctor must consider not only the therapeutic effect on the patient but on the child as well. Ultimately, almost all drugs are transferred into breast milk or can affect the developing fetus. Therefore, the prescribing doctor needs to review the risks and benefits associated with the use of that medication. Similarly, prescribing ophthalmic drugs for children requires special considerations. This course provides an in-depth overview of the several classes of ophthalmic topical drugs in regard to their use and/or contraindications in these special populations of vulnerable patients. |
