| TITLE:
Dry Eye Discomfort and Contact Lens Wear |
| ABSTRACT:
Wearing a contact lens alters the tear film and the blink rate. The Canadian Dry Eye Epidemiology Study found that 22% of non-contact lens wearers and 50% of contact lens wearers visiting an optometrist had dry eye symptoms. Both patients who experience dry eye discomfort while wearing contact lenses as well as those who are being fitted with contact lenses for the first time can be evaluated using a 10-minute dry eye work-up. This includes a patient history, the Schirmer tear test, as well as fluorescein and lissamine green (or rose Bengal) staining tests. Management strategies for patients with dry eye include making lifestyle changes, as well as choosing optimal contact lenses and artificial tear and cleaning solutions. |
