Online learning can be both enriching and convenient. Trying to find appropriate coursework to meet state CE requirements, however, has been quite a chore. Another aspect of online CE is the lower cost per unit hour. Most courses are very low cost (and, in some cases, entirely FREE!). Online CE will never take the place of the lectures, conferences and vacation CE with colleagues and experts in the eye care field. But it can be a valuable method to supplement your learning. Some precautions are in order to ensure that the coursework you take is both comprehensive and accurate, as well as acceptable to your state licensing board (or other governing body). COPE approval is a good way to verify the course content meets the minimum standards. Courses without accreditation can still be educational, but you should verify directly with your state board whether they meet CE requirements.
